Yesterday, Indian Butch called while I was having a cheeseburger at the Barge Inn in Newport, Oregon. He was back from commercial tuna fishing, and getting ready for dungeness crab season. He came in and I noticed something weird protruding from his back pack. With a flourish, he pulled out a mummified cat that he had found under some house. Somehow, it had hung itself on insulation wire. The muscle and bone articulation detail was amazing; the skin was like parchment; the snarl of agony eternally preserved.

When I snapped a picture with my cell phone, however, a transformation occurred. Light rushed through the door, and the cat became fluorescent, if not phosphorescent, and digitally blinding.
Butch, a Sioux, said the cat's soul needed to escape, to be set free. He said he had visions, and his people have considered training him as a medicine man, but he is undecided.
