A while back, the astronomers' union voted to remove "planet" status from Pluto, which we always thought was the ninth planet from the sun. In school, we always learned how it goes: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. In fact, the change for Pluto means that we must now think of our solar system with eight planets, where it always used to be of nine.
The thing is -- this changed the English language, and Pluto became a verb. To be "Plutoed" is to be demoted.
I suspect that something similar is now happening with Don Imus, the morning radio personality who was also simulcast on MSNC television. After his remark that snidely dismissed and denigrated the women of the Rutgers University basketball team, MSNBC has pulled the plug on his show. CBS radio and WFAN may follow suit, although I write this at a time when that is not announced by the radio people. (The word now is of a 2-week suspension for Imus.)
This may change the English language and Imus may become a verb. To be "Imused" is to be canned or terminated.
'Tis better to be Plutoed than to be Imused!
