A new shelter for homeless veterans in Wheaton is a house without occupants until its administrators can dig up $95,000 to get its assistance program up and running. The Beds are made, there's food in the cupboard, but the only people in the house on West Street exist in framed photos. Those are photos from wars gone by involving Bob Adams of Lombard and Dirk Enger of Winfield, two veterans who,ve spearheaded the project.
The Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans is greared towards helping them get back on their feet, find jobs and reunited with famly and friends. The House is ready. The mortage payments are in order. So is the Staff. There's just not enough funding.
Let me tell you about these two veterans. Dirk Enger a Marine from Gulf War One has gone to Washington and fought for veterans benefits. He co-chaired with me for Veterans For Kerry giving 110% everytime.
Bob Amams a combat medic from Vietnam also fought with us for Kerry. This man cares for people and veterans. He has dedicated his life to helping veterans.
As you all know from my post I fight for veterans. Under Bush more and more veterans are going homeless. At the last Veterans Committee hearing we found out that 33% of all the homeless are veterans. Bush and company have cut veterans at every turn.
Now there are several fundraisers in the works. The next event is a motorcycle ride starting and ending at Hoss'Roadhouse in Bartlett IL on Aug 13. For more info on the ride call (630)876-4615)
