The build up to the Iraq War was again being discussed today. There was a rumour that Tony Blair had taken as much notice of what the Scriptures had to say about the situation, as reports from the intelligence agencies. This wild-sounding allegation was not instantly rejected, because many people had wondered if the Almighty 's consultancy had been previously sought on the subject.
Some years ago Bush had played down suggestions that he had conferred with both his Creator and Hans Blix, the UN inspector, before the decision to go to war was made. He made it clear that he had never met Blix.
Bush 's team had argued that Blix was only in areas near Baghdad, but God was everywhere in the region. They agreed that Blix 's report was detailed on the state of Saddam 's missiles, but said it lacked any reference to plans for smiting, from brimstone-related weaponry.
They, more recently, have denied using God as a strategic weapon during the actual conflict. They have, they claimed, kept the Special Flood Services in reserve.
They apologised for the gnats plague in Baghdad but say it was caused by a US latrine, which certainly was not "Divine ".
Maybe Tony has outsmarted us all again. Having God as a spin doctor, is maybe not such a bad idea. Let 's face it. If God got away with killing all the first born in Egypt and still be worshipped, he really can 't put a foot wrong.
