How are sneak comments posted?

Usually I'm notified if a comment is posted to my diary or article, but recently comments were posted and I didn't get any notification, so I wasn't able to respond.

I try to respond to comments that are posted to my diaries and articles. It is very useful that OpEdNews notifies content providers when comments are posted to their stories.

But I recently had occasion to look at a diary I'd posted some time back and there were comments posted there that I had never gotten any notification about. The diary is now archived, so I can no longer respond.

One of the comments was posted by JC Garrett, a senior editor here, and the other by Francine. The diary is here:

How were they able to post comments without me being notified so that I could respond?

Are all articles archived automatically, or can archiving be done by an editor at their discretion?
