The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said Friday that people can request cash, food or medical assistance through a new website. A department spokesman says it could save people a trip to their county offices.
The online applications will be forwarded to a county caseworker, who will determine whether applicants are eligible for the programs. People already enrolled could manage their benefits through the website.
The state says the recession has led many people to apply for assistance for the first time and the website is one way to accommodate them.
