Well, on the second anniversary of my arriving in Katy, Texas, it looks like I'm going to get to experience my first hurricane. Ike is bearing down on us, and will, apparently, pass right over us. High winds and torrential rains are predicted for this area, soon after Ike comes ashore, sometime late Friday night or early Sunday morning. My neighbors are boarding up their windows, the gas stations are running out of gas, and apprehension is evident in the eyes of those shopping for supplies at Walmart and Target.
We have an inner walk-in closet in our home, where my wife and I will retreat to, with our daughter and grandchildren, should it become necessary.
We considered driving north, but Highway 10 is already beginning to fill up, despite entreaties by the local emergency management people to allow Galveston residents to leave first.
We have water, food, batteries, and first-aid supplies ready, and I'm charging up my camcorder batteries for the big show.
So, lets see what one of these Gulf hurricanes are like.
I tend to get calm during these kinds of experiences. My curiosity and facination with the situation start to take over, and I wait with a certain amount of anticipation and interest in what the coming event will be like.
I'll continue to up-date OpEd.com as long as I am able, and as long as my lap-top stays charged, should the power go out.
We pray that this one poops out before it gets here! Wish us luck, everyone!
