If you have not heard already, Green Party candidate for Congress in Louisiana's second district Malik Rahim's campaign has launched a project to allow people all over the country - and even people outside of the US - to volunteer for it. It is a phone-banking project, but not in the traditional sense. A script, instructions, and other materials are provided online and anyone who wants to can sign up to call potential voters in New Orleans before the December 6th election. It is organized through Campaign Foundations and Green Change. You can sign up here.I have been participating in this project, and it is one of the best things I have seen from a third party candidate this year. Not only does it allow you to participate even if you are thousands of miles from New Orleans, like I am, but it tracks your progress. For instance, I have called twenty people, spoken with two voters, left multiple messages, and scheduled one call back.
The progress of the project overall has been good, but not spectacular. Hopefully over the next six days more people will sign up and make calls. The progress of the total phone bank operation:
Overall our phone canvass team has worked 70 phone bank shifts, dialed 823 phone numbers, spoken with 158 voters, left messages with 190 households, identified unknown supporters, added 10 subscribers to our campaign lists, placed 3 yard signs, scheduled 17 call backs
If every person who saw this article volunteered, the number of calls made could easily be doubled (or more), even if each person only made one call. And now is a great time to volunteer. Just read an email sent out today:
