On Wednesday, US Senator John McCain (R-AZ) officially suspended his campaign in order to return to Washington, DC to personally involve himself in legislative negotiations on a financial rescue package. By Thursday, after McCain's return, those talks had divided along bipartisan ideological lines and largely stalemated. Today McCain announced that he will debate his Democratic opponent, US Senator Barack Obama at the University of Mississippi as previously scheduled. On Wednesday McCain said he would skip the debate.
It is not clear if McCain has officially resumed his campaign, or if he is merely taking an interlude from his intervention in the Congressional bailout process, to debate Obama.
McCain's actions and statements this week point to confusion in his campaign strategy as the 72-year-old candidate jets to Mississippi to debate his 47-year-old rival.
