Today's the tenth Birthday for Opednews-- birthday, anniversary-- I don't know what to call it, but it's nice to see we're still here, still publishing great writing by a wonderful range of writers, covering what could be the widest range of topics on the web today.

I started Opednews out of frustration over the impending Iraq war, frustration with Colin Powell's lies about WMDs, disgust with the theft of the 2000 election in Florida, and by the Supreme Court. The site took off fast.

below, you'll see links to the first few days of Op-eds on the site.

By late 2004, I couldn't keep up with the articles coming in and I embarked on building a content management system. That's what Opednews.com runs on now-- a unique, proprietary system I co-developed with Vidya, a brilliant programmer/webmaster and a usually behind the scenes member of the OEN team.

The site started with two volunteers-- Amanda Lang and Joan Brunwasser-- and one commenter-- Mark Sashine.

We've come a long way. Now we have a volunteer editor team approaching 50 people, and over 60,000 registered members.

It's not always easy. There's a constant struggle to balance openness with editorial policy that produces content that is trusted and respected. It means we get called censors all the time, when we reject articles making unreasonable claims. We also get a lot of spammers, so we've ended up banning over 6000 people, most of them commercial spammers who try to use the site to sell home loans, viagra, coffee and the like.

And Opednews is more than just a news and opinion site. It's a community. To make it a pleasant one, we moderate the comments-- to keep them civil.

These challenges sometimes add up to me, opednews and other volunteer editors getting hate mail. Yes, it's part of the territory, but that doesn't ameliorate the unpleasantness.

I'm not really complaining, just sharing so you'll get an idea of some of the aspects of this job I do and the volunteer editors do. It's one of the reasons why we have a zero tolerance policy for abuse of our editors.

Today is the last day of the month. We've made real progress catching up in the last week, but we're still $1300 behind on making our $4300 budget. Yesterday we had one $250 donation. That really helped. But we've also had a lot of $5 and $10 donations. Can you help us, in our tenth anniversary month, help us make budget?

Rob Kall has spent his adult life as an awakener and empowerer-- first in the field of biofeedback, inventing products, developing software and a music recording label, MuPsych, within the company he founded in 1978-- Futurehealth, and founding, organizing and running 3 conferences: Winter Brain, on Neurofeedback and consciousness, Optimal Functioning and Positive Psychology (a pioneer in the field of Positive Psychology, first presenting workshops on it in 1985) and Storycon Summit Meeting on the Art Science and Application of Story-- each the first of their kind. Then, when he found the process of raising people's consciousness and empowering them to take more control of their lives one person at a time was too slow, he founded Opednews.com-- which has been the top search result on Google for the terms liberal news and progressive opinion for several years. Rob began his Bottom-up Radio show, broadcast on WNJC 1360 AM to Metro Philly, also available on iTunes, covering the transition of our culture, business and world from predominantly Top-down (hierarchical, centralized, authoritarian, patriarchal, big) to bottom-up (egalitarian, local, interdependent, grassroots, archetypal feminine and small.) Recent long-term projects include a book, Bottom-up-- The Connection Revolution, debillionairizing the planet and the Psychopathy Defense and Optimization Project.
