The corporate/government machine that now rules America continues its mission to destroy the traditional American family structure in favor of centralized control, collectivization and central planning. We used to have families with two parents in the home, working reasonable hours to obtain the necessary food, clothes and housing and having additional time, energy and patience to raise proper children. Now, while both parents work long hours and struggle to make ends meet, the children either sit home watching TV, playing video games or surfing the internet or eating junk food and gaining weight or sleeping all day because they're depressed or roaming around outside on the streets unsupervised.
When these families split up, as they do more often during times of economic distress, the father often ends up being ordered by a court somewhere to pay child support. On the surface this may seem a noble undertaking by the state; making fathers take responsibility for their children. Unfortunately, the state often uses draconian and unrealistic methods to make the fathers pay. In many cases the father's income or available resources are never considered. He may be made to pay based on "imputed income", where the state decides what the father, "should be making". Obviously, using this formula will lead to many fathers falling behind, especially when economic conditions are depressed.
I know of two cases here in New Hampshire that illustrate what can happen. One fellow was arrested and spent about three weeks in solitary confinement in a county jail until his friends and relatives came up with the money he owed. Another guy will have a warrant for his arrest issued on June 1st unless he can come up with $5,000, which he doesn't have. Another common tactic is to suspend the father's driver's license until he pays up, which begs the question: how is the father supposed to work and make any money to support either himself or his children when he can't drive anymore?
Stupid is as stupid does.
