Senator Harry Reid 1939-12-02 is 70 years old today. You can wish Harry a happy birthday on his Facebook Page. This might be the only happy day has this year if he doesn't get the healthcare bill passed. By the time completes his next term in office, if he has a next term in office, Harry will be 77 years old. There is a good chance Harry might be Daschled by the good people of Nevada.I pass through Searchlight, NV, Harry's birthplace on my way to Las Vegas and always wonder how Searchlight has benefitted from having one of its own as Senate Majority Leader. It is a gritty little town of about 600 surrounded by miles and miles of desert. If Searchlight is not in the middle of nowhere you can it from beautiful Downtown Searchlight, Speed Limit 25 mph, strictly enforced, you betcha. They named the elementary school after Harry. Edith Head, the famous Hollywood costume designer, is also from Searchlight.
To see how Harry stacks up age-wise in the US Senate check out this page. Harry is well above the median age of 63 years old for US Senators. The oldest Senator is Senator Robert Byrd of West Viriginia. He is 92. The youngest is a senator from Florida - George LeMieux.
Harry Reid is one of those people that you wonder how he got to be where he is today.
Some key Harry Reid quotes:
"This flu is going to strike us all, me, my children, my grandchildren, and if they get it, half of them are going to die."
"The major oil companies haven't even tried to build one single new refinery or significantly expand a refinery in this country in 30 years,"
"Our troops and the American people need the president to pay more than just lip service to a strategy for the war in Iraq, they need him to lay out what that strategy is with clear markers by which success can be measured,"
"this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything "
"The president said, "Let's send some more troops over there, and that will give the Iraqis the time to take care of themselves." We sent other troops over there, and there are a lot of reasons the surge certainly hasn't hurt. It's helped. I recognize that."
