Well, the cat’s out of the bag now. A democrat Senator spoke out regardingthe poor leadership of the war in Iraq by the military Generals. He was
speaking more of General Pace than anyone else, but I think all leadership
there has been poor since the inception of the invasion. We had troops
there without body armor. We had Humvees without protective coverings.
Leadership probably wasn’t overly concerned. They were not in the Humvees.
They were not at the front.
No, when necessary they assign a delegation of soldiers, with attendant
Humvee support, to haul visiting politicians to marketplaces where they buy
sunglasses. Then they go to the Officers Club and talk about how well
things are going.
Joe Lieberman and John McCain looked absolutely foolish after their visits.
I will never forget the image of Lieberman in a set of body armor, wearing a
helmet. He looked like a sixth grader playing Army with his buddies.
They speak now of soccer fields that are usable. They speak of markets as
if they are safe. They are not safe. The insurgents can strike markets at
will. They bomb Mosques at will. They send mortars into the Green Zone.
Yet, our Generals say, “All is well”
Over three thousand five hundred Americans have died in Iraq. The Iraqi
government is still incapable of leading the country. There are hundreds of
thousands of displaced Iraqis, but, so say the Generals, “All is well.”
Generals who attempt to tell President Bush something other than what he
wants to hear are transferred, and many are taking early retirement. Many
of those who have retired have formed an alliance that has attempted to
inform the public of the problems faced in Iraq, but the media doesn’t pay
much heed to them.
This administration, while complaining about the liberal press, controls the
press more than any other in history. This administration has taken “Spin”
to record heights. Look at the Jessica Lynch episode, for an example. None
of what was told as true, by the press, was true. They just said what they
were told to say.
The government doesn’t even pay for transport to a deceased soldiers home.
They pay to the nearest major airport. They don’t recruit them there. They
can find the small towns and hamlets of America easily enough to promise
college educational monies to those who survive. They can paint pretty word
pictures of a better world somewhere other than Podunk, or Gotebo, or
wherever. But, by God, if you get killed it is up to you to get home. That
is so bogus.
And we sit here and let it happen, over and over and over. I wish to offer
my compliments to Senator Reid for opening the bag. It is my fervent wish
that somebody look inside it. All is NOT well in Iraq, and no conniving
General or sneaky President is going to make it right. That, citizens, is
up to us!!
