One of the conveniences of "the Other" is projecting our fears, prejudices, and mores on them; it's comforting to disguise our own deficiencies while projecting them on others.
The banning of an HIV positive child from a pool in Alabama clearly illustrates how very far the United States has yet to go in the battle against ignorance concerning AIDS.
One wonders why big-wig politicians are so set on playing up the lack of AIDS awareness in Africa when such attitudes persist here in the United States.
Perhaps, instead of going to Africa to raise AIDS awareness and to promote medical treatment of HIV disease, Laura Bush should have gone to good 'ole Alabama.
And incidentally, it would be wrong, but easy, to assume that such attitudes in the United States are confined to the deep South. Think again....
