What behaviour do we expect from the rescued?
My personal experience as a surf lifesaver is that the rescued are intially embarassed. Then simply want to get on with life. This is especially so if the rescue was low key.
Only later, if ever, might they reflect on any duty they may owe their rescuer. As a rescuer my greatest reward is that such people lead good rewarding lives as good citizens. But what can we expect from somebody who has learnt that the correct role of other people is to serve them.
People learn their place by osmosis. How people treat them is how they learn to expect to be treated. People learn to be defeated or entitled by constant repetition often based on where they start out in life.
Goldman Sachs seem to have learnt that they are privleged and where 'entitled' to be bailed out. A company that had learnt modesty might have been a little more circumspect about revelling in its return to profitability.
This is especially so when it was supported using taxpayer funds from taxpayers who have just seen their retirement fund disappear.
I only hope that at some time they reflect on what has just happened.
