Here’s a new possible twist to an already twisted tale:
According to “The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How The War on Terror Turned into a War on American Ideals” the terrifying expose by Jane Mayer, the republics of the former Soviet Union were some of the states used by the CIA for ‘extraordinary rendition’ of Al Qaeda and terrorist suspects.
These republics, some of them on the ‘Human Rights Watch’ and the US State Department list for human rights abuses were promised membership in NATO and huge cash payments to comply with CIA ‘requests’ to provide ‘black sites’ for the extra-judicial incarceration and torture of those delivered for ‘interrogation’.
Although not mentioned by name in Mayer’s investigation of the Bush Administration’s policy of torture, the republic of Georgia, then is a likely destination for ‘rendition’ flights.
