(Sydney NSW) Friday October 31 Most folks (except for those columnist/curmudgeons)start to grow happier as Christmas draws closer, but because the weather in the U. S. may be nasty, that can have an adverse effect on the all important sales figures.Usually, Spring is an emotional elixir and folks start to feel good about things, because that means it's time to start counting down the days to the summer vacation.
Australia has a twofer season. When Summer draws nigh, it's also the start of Christmas shopping season.
What's not to like about seeing girls walk by in their Summer clothes ("I have to close my eyes until the darkness goes . . .") as you do your Christmas shopping? You can express your joy by buying Christmas gifts for your friends and family to symbolize your warm gushy feelings?
American merchants would be green with envy if they could see the double exhilaration Christmas shopping in late Spring brings.
Christmas should be moved to the Forth of July to help boost sales. Who says Jesus was born on December 25th? Was it mentioned in that day's edition of the New York Times?
What exactly does it say on his birth certificate?
If it can not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt that he was born on that very day, then the observance of his birthday is a choice and what's not to like about moving it to July 4?
If anyone has any logical objections, we direct your attention to the comments section.
"Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." However we want to know how exact is the December date?
Now, the disk jockey will play Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" (no, that's not the signal to evacuate from Saigon, that already happened) and we'll rush to hang up our stockings. Have a happy "Spring Day" type week.
