Cheap gas and a clean environment: you can't have it both ways. You have to choose. What's more important to you? The cheaper gasoline is, the more people use. The less likely they are to walk, bike, and use public transportation. The bigger the cars/trucks/SUVs they drive. The more likely they are to live far from work, in neighborhoods designed only for cars. When gasoline is expensive the air gets cleaner. Cars get more efficient. We become less dependent on oil. We contribute less to the climate crisis. Clean renewable energy (wind, solar, small hydro, tidal) picks up steam and market share. In short, we have a future.
Gasoline is running out, destroying our planet, and holding our economy back. We can stop using it, but first we have to make it more expensive (after all, people should have to pay the full cost of the pollution they cause). We can make this easier on people by lowering another tax to make up for more expensive gasoline.
Imagine a future where people have transportation choices, where cars don't cause pollution (hydrogen cars powered by clean electricity), where global warming is under control, where energy is clean and moderately priced. That's the future we are building when we make gasoline more expensive.
Ask any addict: kicking a habit isn't easy. But it's worth it. No pain, no gain.
