Chairman John Conyers,
Please do not allow the actions of the Bush administration to stand as
precedents. I realise that there are political risks involved in commencing impeachment proceedings but torture and aggressive invasion, in breach of America's word on international treaties should not remain a part of
American foreign policy.
Whether America really is better than torture and aggressive invasion depends on
what Americans on this watch do.
An unsuccessful impeachment might conceivably result in a Republican President
in 2008 but failing to attempt to use the legitimate and lawful processes to check
the abuses of the Bush administration must have lasting effects on the perceptions ofAmericans in the wider world. At issue really is whether the United States is a nation of laws.
