I saw John once, at Shilshole Marina in Seattle, years back, standing on the bow of his Grey Goose, a converted minesweeper that he sailed up the Inside Passage to Alaska in. Wearing an old grey jacket, he was leaning on the railing, looking down at me, as his ship left the marina. Allegedly, his ghost still haunts the vessel.
If John was still around, there would be a lot less hand-filling going on. And yes, he would take his horse on the plane.
