A few months ago Mr. Obama stated that he want to create the "Inspiration" that Ronald Reagan did while he was president of the U.S. in the 80's. But is that "Feel Good" about ones country during this time reality or fiction?
What I remember about Ronald Reagan and his administration during this time was not something Americans should be proud of. With allegations of secret Iran hostage negotiations, where Iranian assets will be unfrozen after he is elected. What was one of the first things Reagan does upon being sworn in was unfreeze Iranian assets, freeing the hostages.
The FAA strike was settled by firing all the controllers and replacing them with lower wage and benefit employees.
283 Marines dead in Lebanon and a invasion of Grenada to liberate the island from some Cuban laborers.
The Reagan administration was supporting its Freedom Fighter's Saddam Hussein in Iraq, while funneling supplies to its other (RRFF) Osma Bin Laden and the Al-CIAda network in Afghanistan. Later, Iran would become involved with the illegal Iran-Contra shenanigan and the Cocaine epidemic spawned by its weapons for drug transaction's unleashing the violence in the inner city's of the U.S.. Today, Saddam and Osma are re-labeled as "Terrorist's" by the same GOP.
There was the Ann Buford snafu, and the James Watt issue just to list a couple of endless inter-department administration irregularities that happened during Ronnie's terms.
The S & L scandle was another highlight of the glorious 80's, with trillions swindled from the US citizen by the "privileged" class.
The economic numbers during the Reagan years is one of decline for most and a gain for a few. That's what trickle down means.
How conservatives cling to the notion that Senile Ronnie brought down the USSR single-handedly and provided a "Peace" dividend is what I would define as ABSURD. The Reagan administration had absolutely nothing to do with the collapse of the USSR and everything to do with the bloating of government and a runaway federal deficit that your grandchildren will still be paying the interest on.
How can GOP'ers brag about the Reagan years when he represented much of what the party claims to vilify? Family Values-2 marriages, former democrat turncoat republican, seems the only GOP plus is strong military.
The only "Inspiration" the country was identifying with was the Chuck Norris, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis movies where lone US soldier is suppressing impossible enemy odds to complete the mission with a glorious "Mission Accomplished" banner.
A B rated movie of which a similar rated actor named Ronald Reagan played the part of president, while his subordinates ran the illegal clandestine agenda.
Much could be added to this small list of what I remember the 80's as, and certainly don't think its "Inspiring" moments are worth repeating.
