The recent BP oil rig disaster proves once more how bad an idea expanded offshore drilling is -- and what an even worse idea it is, when proposed by President Barack Obama.

::::::::

It must be fate, Barack! Not long ago,you shocked all of us who supported your campaign because we believed you were a progressive candidate who would make a progressive president, by announcing -- unbelievably -- a major expansion in offshore oil exploration along the coasts of the contintential United States and Alaska. Not long after that shocking announcement, which once more betrayed our trust, a BP oil drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico exploded, costing lives and now what is likely to become the worst oil spill disaster in U.S. history!

Bad karma, Barack! At first, even in the face of the oil rig disaster, you maintained that your proposed "In God We Trust -- Drill We Must"

plan would not be affected, even though it was clear from the start that America's Gulf Coast was likely to be severely affected. Now, you may have backed down a mite from your earlier stance; we hear that your offshore drilling plans are being "reviewed." How about substituting CANCELLED for REVIEWED -- how about living up to the hopes of those who backed your candidacy and your presidency?

Wake up and smell the petroleum, Barack. There is no way to prevent such disasters in the future; had Hurricane Katrina hit those hundreds of oil rigs (rather than New Orleans), whose oil flow is nearly impossible to shut off once the rig is severely damaged, the Gulf of Mexico might well have become Petroleum Gulf. And it still might! More such drilling severely increases the risks for very ephemeral gains, and your horrid opening of more offshore oil fields severely endangers this nation. The very idea of increasing offshore drilling is atrocious -- the fact that it came from you, someone we once trusted,is shameful!
