This is my second post of a public diary entry entitled "False Flag Watch" that I will run from time to time to do just that, watch for False Flag Operations, or signs and omens thereof, in America and beyond, because there is much concern right now that there are forces at work within the bowels of our own government, or just beyond in its shadow networks, that are, if not actually planning a staged terrorist attack on America, at least praying for one to happen. These latter "prayers" have actually been duly publicized in the media recently and should be cause for great concern, if for no other reason than the old admonition, "Be careful what you pray for." We are also watching for False Flag Ops beyond America's borders that are designed to strongly impact foreign and domestic policy.

Note as well that False Flag Operations have an ugly history as covert and deceitful tools of governments to achieve less than noble aims, so I am not hallucinating here. False Flag Ops go all the way back to Emperor Nero framing the Christians for the Great Fire of Rome and beyond, wherever and whenever a State or other political body practiced deceit to manipulate its citizens at the expense of some poor scapegoat.

July 24, 2007:

I noticed an article in some newspaper or news blog several months ago to the effect that the American Navy was going to replace the British patrol squadron that was involved in the March 23, 2007 incident off the coast of Iran that led to the capture of 15 Royal Navy personnel, who were manning two small Zodiac-style patrol boats that may or may not have trespassed into Iranian waters. This quickly turned into a small crisis between Britain and Iran, with certain American officers standing in the journalistic background, so to speak, remarking how that under their rules of engagement, there would have been a battle. I guess the inference here is that the British wimped out for not engaging the Iranians in a firefight. Of course, such a reaction would have likely led to some 15 dead or wounded Brits, since they were greatly outgunned, unless their mother ship, the HMS Cornwall, could have intervened, but this is perhaps instructive as to how much Americans are dripping with testosterone these days.

So when I read that the Americans were going to take over patrol duty, my mind immediately registered an “OhOh.” - Walker, Texas Ranger, looking to kick ass, I thought, and left it at that.

Now, however, word is floating around Hampton Roads, Virginia, where most of the Atlantic Fleet hangs out either at NOB (Naval Operations Base) in Norfolk or at the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in Virginia Beach, that, as a matter of fact, an LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushion) unit based at Little Creek is headed for the Persian Gulf to, indeed, replace the British squadron. Compared to the LCACs, the British Patrol boats are dinghies. The LCAC is a monster hover craft 88 feet long and 47 feet wide that can reach speeds of perhaps over 50 knots, go almost anywhere and carry 60 tons of tanks, weapons, and other military hardware not only to a beach, but over the beach (see: http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/lcac.htm ) . It is designed primarily as an amphibious invasion force vehicle, and only by happenstance serves as a “patrol boat”. Needless to say, LCACs are also heavily armed.

By coincidence, the command of Combined Task Force 158, which the above-mentioned Royal Navy patrol boats belonged to, just underwent a routine change of command ceremony last week, with command transferring from the Royal Navy to the American Navy. To cite the Navy Times:

“U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Garry Hall relieved Royal Navy Commodore Nick Lambert on Tuesday (July 17) as commander of Combined Task Force 158, which is tasked with protecting oil terminals near Iraq.

CTF-158 is a coalition of ships from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, which provides security in and around the Al Basrah and Khawr Al Amaya oil terminals in the northern Persian Gulf.

In a change-of-command ceremony onboard Ocean 6, a barge that operates as a command-and-control platform, Hall took over for Lambert, and Capt. Paul Severs relieved Royal Navy Capt. Bob Sanguinetti as commander of Combined Task Group 158.1. The mission of CTG 158.1 is 24-hour protection of the two oil terminals. The group operates from Ocean 6…..”

 - Ain't she pretty. This "air foil" would scare the Hell out of all the alligators in the Florida Everglades.  (photo source: http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/lcac-kb97_8-s.jpg

Nothing remarkable here, in and of itself, but here is the rub. Not only is this deployment itself being bandied about in Virginia Beach, but unit personnel are apparently bragging (or confessing) that they are being deployed with the express intent of escalating tensions with Iran, to challenge the Iranian Navy and perhaps even provoke a military response, aka the Gulf of Tonkin. Silly rumor or Déjà vu?

Now, if Combined Task Force 158 is also going to be operating under the more aggressive US Navy rules of engagement, then the potential for increased hostilities between the US Navy and Iranian Navy is obvious. This paradigm, so to speak, only confirms many Americans’ worst fears that the Bush Administration is intent upon attacking Iran this year or next, and that Dick Cheney, AIPAC and the Neocon cabal are almost literally chomping at the bits to do so, as if the fate of the universe depends upon it. It would be most unfortunate if the enlisted crew of an LCAC is the chosen sacrifice for the altar of Mars.

Given the fact that there is already some serious saber rattling going on between Iran and the United Stated, this is caustic information indeed. Of course, I can’t equate word of mouth and rumors with formal Navy press releases, nor can I count on sailors’ bravado or rumblings as proof of a government conspiracy to engineer yet another war through a contrived naval incident. I can, however, place this in the signs and omens category as an indication that the Bush Administration is moving in the direction of increased hostilities with Iran. This is still a step above looking at the entrails of dead animals in the tradition of Roman soothsayers.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Gulf of Tonkin, this was the casus belli for President Johnson’s dramatic escalation, through the official blessings of an enraged Congress, of the Vietnam War in 1964, after it was reported that North Vietnam patrol boats had attacked the USS Maddox and USS Turner Joy not once, but twice in several days in the Gulf of Tonkin, just off the coast of North Vietnam. The US was at that time playing a deadly game of chicken with the North Vietnamese, for wont of a better term.

Although the first attack was real, it was later proven that the second attack never took place, and that the latter alleged attack was either a tragi-comedy of errors, such as flying fish going on a moonlit rampage, or a willful deception, in other words, a False Flag Op. The Gulf of Tonkin was, indeed, the lynchpin for launching a full-scale war from the kindling of what had hitherto been a low-level conflict in South Vietnam. Some ten years and millions of dead later, that entire debacle finally ended. Are we within weeks or months of seeing a similar scenario begin to play itself out in the Persian Gulf?
