Until the entire LGBT community is given equal legal status, we will be preyed upon and violently attacked by people who use our second-class citizenship as a justification.

There has been another atrocious beating of a gay man in Queens the other day. A beating so vicious it is clear that the intent was to kill him. All the focus of commentators seems to be on the fact that these men who did the beating used biblical evidence as their defense.
But this country is not a theocracy. Our laws do not come from the Bible. We do not use that as the basis of our legal system. Murder, attempted murder, those are legal terms we use when we indict people. And these two men will be indicted on those or similar charges.
What the entire LGBT community is owed is not another round of Bible quotes and ideas about how to interpret the Bible to defend the community, but equal status under the laws of this country. Until that happens, these types of crimes are not looked at for what they are--bias, hate and fearful attacks against a second-class citizenry. Wake up people. This is not a religious war. It is a legal battle that must be won.
