Our leaders had to make changes to the original stories that came out about the killing of Osama bin Laden. The new story suffers as well. Here is the new story and how it falters. After some revisions, our leaders have now given us a story of the events surrounding the death of Osama bin Laden. Here is the story with questions and comments we should be making in response.
The Story : They got the tip of bin Laden's whereabouts in Pakistan from an incarcerated terrorist who had been tortured.
Critical
response : This does not justify torture. Should we forget
about the times when prisoners lie during and after torture? Should we forget of more humane and effective ways of getting information from prisoners?
The Story : A top-secret team of Navy SEALs went to the compound and bin Laden happened to be there in an upstairs bedroom. Though he was unarmed, he somehow resisted capture. The SEALs shot bin Laden in the head and killed him.
Critical response : We invaded the sovereign nation of Pakistan. We sidestepped the legal issues of shooting unarmed people. It seems clear that we make the rules on self-defense to suit our needs and we make them on the spot.
The Story : The team then took bin Laden's corpse and, citing a Muslim tradition on burial, dumped his body into the Indian Ocean.
Critical response : Where is the Muslim tradition calling for a quick burial? Traditions on the timeliness of burials appear to be varied. And no tradition calls for a burial at sea. Was the decision on the burial really about law? The best evidence in a killing is the body itself and now the body is gone so it is difficult to question what really happened.
The Story : Now that we "got" bin Laden, we have to be careful about reprisals from his sympathizers.
Critical response : If the fear of reprisals was really justified, why kill bin Laden? How many lives is his death worth?
The Story : Now we got the "bad guy"!
Critical
response : Not so
fast. Bin Laden was never officially
wanted for 9/11. This execution looks
less and less like justice and more and more like a political move for the
Obama Administration and a cover-up for the real perpetrators of the crimes. This is not a story; it is a myth.
