The fundamentalist Christians who think about Israel at all view the Jews as custodians. They are to guard Jerusalem to ensure the safety of Jesus when He returns as the Messiah. Many Christians believe that the Muslims would behead Jesus on His return.
Many secular leftists associate Evangelical Christians with George W Bush and his warlike and dictatorial policies. They oppose his Iraq invasion and his slaughter of Arabs. They see Israel and her propaganda machine as partners in crime with Bushco. They view Israeli leaders as hawks.
How can an observer tell the good actors from the bad ones. The bad guys vilify Jews. They do not want democracy in the region. Big oil and dictators want a licence to steal in the region. Nothing pleases them more than a nation populated by step and fetch mindless dupes. Dictators don't want to be caught at the airport with suitcases stuffed with money.
Many leftists favor the underdog, as would be expected. They preach peace, but haven't a clue how to get it. We nationals of the region laugh at the self-styled negotiators. They think they can broker a peace using bribes, negotiations and thinly veiled threats. Democracy is what George Bush did to the Iraqis.
