What do economists say about war?
To find out, I met with a PhD professor of economics, with a background in international conflict.
I told him that conventional wisdom holds that war is good for the economy; but that the war in Iraq seems to have destroyed America's economy.
He explained this seeming paradox:
"Wars always cause recession. Well, if they are very short wars, then they stimulate the economy. But if there is not a quick victory and they drag on, they always put the nation waging war into a recession and hurt its economy."This contradicts all of the "war is good for the economy" propaganda I've heard for years.
And it reveals that the "endless war" strategy of Bush, Cheney, McCain and the boys would ensure endless economic problems for America.
Forget that the Iraq war is illegal. Forget that it is immoral. Forget that it is unnecessary. Forget that it is weakening our true national security and creating generations of people who hate us.
It is also destroying our economy.
And how about Iran? Would a war against Iran lead to a quick victory? Given that Russia, China, and many other countries would consider an attack on Iran an attack on their national interests . . . its not very likely.
