The election is big news with all the entertaining episodes of hate, vote tampering, good and bad behavior. It can be so entertaining that the public ignores news of other problems and concerns. Future policy is not restricted to the soon to be elected; the current administration has an unopposed opportunity for change, too.

::::::::

With all the emphasis on the election, articles on actions by the Bush administration are left comment-free.  Yet each warns of serious problems that will hinder the effectiveness of any change after the elections.

Elections are important but gutting the structure in which our laws functions Is an action that can’t be ignored.  Each of these articles discusses serious consequences of ignoring the actions that of our current administration is taking.  News of election battles are a misdirected of vigilance.

As a new administration is elected, the old one is left with only a 60 day grace period to effect a legacy.  The Bush administration  is not unique in changing policies during this lame duck period.  But the current emphasis on gutting our protections for parks, clean air, resources, and energy threatens decades of work.

Nixon did not win many thoughts of appreciation, but he passed more environmental protection laws then any other president.  Perhaps Bush considers that a blemish on the Republican image and is trying to correct it.  Perhaps he truely believes protections aremisguided.  Regardless, the public is misguided in ignoring these changes.
