What is wrong with the Governor of South Carolina?  Gov. Mark Sanford (R/Gun Nut) is taking the ridiculous stance of refusing $700 million in Federal Recovery and Reinvestment Funds that would go to improving the state's dangerously failing schools, yet he signed into a law a bill that allows loaded weapons on school grounds.

Does he hate kids?

In an ironic twist, the Federal assistance money Sanford is refusing would also go to improving and increasing state law enforcement.  So when there's a violent gun crime committed at a school, there might not be sufficient police presence to manage it.  Wonderful logic there, Gov.  Gee, do you really want loaded weapons on school grounds with all those struggling students and pissed-off teachers?

Now the state Supreme Court is getting involved.  See, even if Sanford doesn't want the money, the State Legislature does and has included the currently non-existant funds in next year's budget.  But they can't spend money to improve schools and increase public safety programs if they don't get the cash, so lawsuits have been filed to force the Governor's hand.  Two of those were filed by students and school administrators who are outraged over Sanford's obstinate stance.   Sanford seemed to take that hard, appearing ready to concede defeat as he spoke with reporters on Tuesday.  "It looks like we will be bound to spend that money," he said.

Poor Sanford.  The state Supreme Court might force him to fund his schools and increase public safety and law enforcement programs.  Dang, there goes his plan to keep his state in the dark ages.

Look on the bright side, Gov, at least you get to keep the loaded guns in the school yards!  It's not a total loss.
