I laughed out loud, yes, even during such a sad moment for the United States and seekers of peace everywhere, in the middle of the President's Speech on escalating the Iraq war Wednesday night. It happened when the President said he had made it clear to the Iraqi government that our committment was "not open-ended;" that if Iraqis failed to do their part, we would withdraw our support.I laughed because for the past 17 years, we have been destroying Iraq at paces both fast and slow. We blew it to bits in 1991 and have been blowing it to bits again for the past four years, with the slow decimation of draconian sanctions and occasional bombing runs in between.
So now President Bush is telling the Iraqis that we will only continue destroying their country if they meet our terms. In essence, "don't make me stop blowing up your country."
Jus thought I would throw in something a little lighter in a very dark time. With the not-at-all veiled threats against Syria and Iran and direct references to a bloody and violent "year" ahead, this business is only going to get grimmer and grimmer, unless somebody stops the insanity. Perhaps the Iraqis will simply "take a fall" and give the President an excuse to leave with someone else to blame in his own mind (the only place that matters to him).
