Obama will only be as good as we make him.

Obama has been elected president. What now? The conservative forces in this country have stumbled, but they are far from beaten. Obama himself embodies many of their ideas. If we want to make the next four years meaningful, we cannot be Obama cheerleaders.

We need to pull Obama towards progressive ideas: towards peace, towards a fair distribution of wealth, towards universal health care, towards election reform. We need to give Obama the courage to stand up to the corporate interests that dominate Washington D.C. If we do not act decisively, the corporate power structure will win by default. Make no mistake, Obama will disappoint you if you don't keep the pressure on.

So, don't celebrate, get to work. Find a group that advocates for something you believe in and work together with the members of that group to make sure that our new president lives up to the rhetoric of his campaign. It's up to you.

 

My intellectual awakening is ongoing. Lately, politically, I'm most interested in efforts to break down two-party rule in this country. I registered Green after the Democrats won control of Congress. The more I think about it, the happier I am with (more...)
