Blood Brothers
Towing Bush's line as predicted, Republicans kill the Webb Bill, legislation introduced by Va Democratic senator Jim Webb, which would have ensured that troops deployed to Iraq would be given time home equal to the time of their Iraq tours.
Senator Chuck Hagel, R-NE, who co-sponsored the bill, said the White House "has been very effective at making this a loyalty test for the Republican Party."
An understatement if I ever heard one.
Of the 56 senators voting to advance the measure were 49
Democrats, seven Republicans and Vermont Independent
Bernie Sanders.
Voting against it were 43 Republicans and Connecticut Independent Joe Lieberman. Lieberman explained that "the vote means Congress will not intervene in the foreseeable future."
Ah...Lieberman, the ever-loyal Bush administration apparatchik and renowned chickenhawk, efficiently as always, helps to ensure that his leader remains the only decider.
That the government estimates that as many as 60 US troops will be killed in Iraq each month for what is now guaranteed to be an indefinite period of time, is inconsequential to Bush, Lieberman, and their twisted compatriots.
No news there, but some analysts speculate that by appeasing their war-loving base through the general election, the GOP chances of re-election are a little brighter.
The prediction is that these political prostitutes, (no offense to sex workers), will then have a change of heart, deem the US occupation of Iraq a success...or, eh, the Iraqi's can now fend for themselves to a much greater degree, and begin to talk in earnest about a pull-out of US troops.
I'll believe that when I see it.
That these obstructionist, immoral dogs of Congress are willing to indefinately sacrifice the lives of US troops and countless Iraqis so their base will re-elect them, is a travesty in a long line of political tragedies that have infected, and help define the American political system.
Typically, loss of life is nothing when loss of votes is on the table.
