Dozens of pages on FB promote violence against women. Some feature images, others just titles and discussions fantasizing about raping women.

::::::::

Below is a sampling of the pro-rape pages up and running on Facebook. Note that this is just a sampling, and that some of these pages have more than 3,000 members/friends. They feature images of sexual violence, jokes about rape and attacks against women daring to object.I've reported them all and anyone concerned about this issue should as well.

This list demonstrates not only the down side of social networking sites, which is predictable, of course, but the rampant disregard in our culture for crimes against women. Particularly crimes of a sexual nature.

id r a p e dat (aka Rape Dat),

It's Not R A P E if you enjoy it ;

RAPE is only surprise sex; its not r.a.p.e if its wanted;

its not r a p e if u like it;

It's not r.a.p.e if you yell SURPRISE!;

If You R a p e a Whore is it R a p e or Theft?;

or i can Rap.e ur mom;

it's not r.a.p.e if you enjoy it :

it's not r.ap.e, its "SURPRISE" s.ex;

R-A-P-E!; "ITS NOT R.APE IF YOU LIKE IT!"

This last one features a pic of a woman hog-tied with the caption "If she really didn't want to, she'd have said something."

The Really Disgusting Award goes to the page titled: "9 out of 10 people enjoy gang rape."

I write in this space quite a bit about women and media. No thinking person wants social networking to advance violence against anyone, and generally I have found such sites progressive and informed. But this case demonstrates the dangerous and painful potential of these sites. Most have "report" mechanisms and in cases like these, we should all do just that.
