I do believe we all (or most of us) did have an appreciation of the "good" and "bad" in ourselves, and others, while we were students at Garbally ; and, on reflection, that it might have been purer and more straightforward in some respects that the one which comes later during the years of adult life, and the wider encounters with other people which the "journey of life" tends to provide us with.
The story you have provided about Fr Page's grandfather is interesting to me, especially when it is linked with something I read which stated (in effect) that France seemed to have had a big attraction for him (i.e. Fr Page ). It seems he regularly visited France during Summer holiday periods, and was a fluent French speaker. (I now wonder if he might have felt strangely "drawn", i.e. via "genetic whisperings" of some kind, to the Clermont-Ferrand area? - please see further down.)
Time and again, since returning to Ireland to retire in 1998, I have come across evidence -- without looking for it -- which suggests that the deeply-embedded conflict in humanity between "good" and "bad" is very likely a function of genetics (for the most part), and, that it could, in a VERY rough-and-ready way be represented by the conflict between the ancient Celts and the Roman Empire: which has never ceased really (in one form or another it seems to me), but which has been disguised and covered up to make it look like it has.
"J'ai pris les armes pour la libertà © de tous" (" I took up arms for the liberty of all ").
That's not the kind of thing the Roman Empire of Christ's time was doing, and neither is it what their modern despotic equivalents of the " Anglo American Empire " (as I see them) are at present doing: despite all of their cunning and dishonest efforts to verbally fool people into believing that "democracy" is their primary aim, while, at the same time, practicing and promoting "elected dictatorship" of the kind that is heading humanity directly in the direction of absolute tyranny.
Basically, I have accidentally found lots of evidence to suggest that people who behave compassionately, and who do so in a holistic way towards humanity as a whole, and as a matter of PRINCIPLE -- like Fr Page did (for example), and not based on "personality", "position", "name", "school", "nationality", "religion", "party membership", etcetera -- are likely to have have considerably more Celtic genes in them than those who do the "other thing": i.e. indulge themselves in corruption of one kind or another, morning, noon, and night, for the benefit of one section (their own particular "fragment" that is) of humanity, and who do so in ways which are frequently at the direct expense of all of the other "fragments": thus setting in motion the endless conflicts caused by the vast array of real injustices (i.e. violations of the Natural/God-Given sense of justice that has been genetically programmed into us in the womb, which is well represented in the constitutions of several nations including those of the Republic of Ireland and the United States of America), and where the manmade injustices in question cannot possibly be separated from all of the political, legal, and corporate corruption the world is at present saddled with.
Additionally, and although it's not well known at the present time (as far as I am aware), both former US Presidents Thomas Jefferson , and Abraham Lincoln , appear to have been descended from Celtic ancestors who in ancient times lived in the Snowdonia region of North Wales. Then there was our own John F. Kennedy of course; and the fact that it's been all downhill really (as I see things) for humanity -- as a whole -- since he and his brother Robert were assassinated (in the 1960s) in connection with (I strongly suspect) their efforts to stop the "Anglo American Despots" (as I see them) from taking over the whole world through the highly fraudulent and socially-destructive scams embedded in such things as " debt-based fractional reserve lending "; more recently by the closely related quadrillions of Euros of "derivatives gambling debts" ; and, which are both (in turn) mostly the 1913 (or thereabouts) product of the unconstitutional (and consequently unlawful) United States Federal Reserve Banking System : which, in reality, is no more "Federal" than "Delany's Donkey".
"Corrupt": from corrumpere , to "break into pieces": and then through the cunning promotion of injustice s of every kind which they (the despots that is) can slyly think up, to have the "fragments" all fighting with each other so that the relatively tiny group of leading-despots can make complete fools of humanity overall through such never-ending distractions, and all other deceitful means available to them; generally make debt-slaves of all these they can use for such purposes; allow as many as possible of the old, weak, and otherwise "unproductive" to die from cold, starvation, shoddy health-care, unlawfully blocked pensions , and so on; and, last but not least, to carry out a large-scale cull of "everything else (all the crud!!)" seen as "surplus to requirements" (from their viewpoint), through the use of a thermonuclear war (and biological weapons) perhaps?
It's a fine "how do you do" we all find ourselves in just now, is it not?
