According to the CIA's "World Factbook" (available online) the USA has a per-capita GDP of about $46,000 and Canada's is about $39,000. Per-capita GDP is the total value of goods and services produced by a nation's economy divided by the number of people who live in that nation. So, given that America is collectively richer than Canada, it should be a little surprising that in Canada, nobody lacks health insurance and in the USA, about 47 million people do.
Why is that? It's all about the distribution of wealth. In Canada, it's much more even: they have single-payer health care funded through taxation. The rich chip in to help the working poor secure their basic needs. What a concept! Fewer Porches, healthier people. Seems fair doesn't it?
We prefer to let people suffer. We need single-payer now. It's off the table for both Obama and McCain, but not for all the candidates (e.g. Nader).
