The President this evening vetoed a bill to fund United States Armed Forces currently engaged in an armed conflict of the President's own making.
The President's veto comes at an historical low point for Mr. Bush and his Republican Party.
Having chosen to invade Iraq, a country with no connection to the terrorist attacks on 9/11, Mr. Bush has created a double-quagmire: he has diverted resources from the origin of the 9/11 terrorist attack (Afghanistan) and has created a militarily unwinnable situation on the ground in Iraq.
With the military objective of creating a stable democracy in Iraq vanished, Mr. Bush's only reasonable course of action is to bring about a political settlement of the current civil war in Iraq through diplomatic means.
Unfortunately, as he has exhausted the military, so too has he exhausted diplomatic options.
