As his failures compound and Congressional Republicans desert him, Bush, in his Messianic megalomania, might lash out in a gigantic Wagnerian Gotterdamerung.

::::::::

It's obvious to even a casual observer that the administration of George W. Bush is an utter failure and has been a catastrophe not only for America, but the whole world. The man has the reverse Midas touch (the Sadim touch?), absolutely everything he touches, from Iraq to medicare to the skyrocketing national debt, turns to crap.

His most recent assault on the constitution, sending FBI agents to rummage, gestapo style, through the capitol office files of a sitting member of Congress, is unprecedented and has outraged even Washington Republicans.

Fearing that they will lose their majority in congress in November, politically savvy Republicans must be considering a preemptive impeachment and removal of Bush and Cheney before the elections. This would elevate Republican Dennis Hastert to the presidency and enable them to pass themselves off as statesmen who put the interests of the country before partisan politics and thereby enhance their chance for reelection. Their fear is that if they don't do this they have no chance of being reelected and the newly elected Democrat majority would impeach anyway.

Either way Bush would be toast and he can be expected to preempt his impeachment by exercising even more dictatorial power than he already has, perhaps even contriving an incident to justify an extraordinary suspension of constitutionally protected rights. Given his record only those who haven't been paying attention for the past five and a half years will be surprised by anything this man does.

We should heed the admonition of the philosopher, Jean Jacques Rousseau, who said, "Free people, remember this maxim: we may acquire liberty, but it is never recovered if it is once lost."
