Is there anyone reading this who seriously believes that George W. Bush is fully in possession of his faculties? Because of his megalomaniacal posturing as the "decider" ( a ridiculous and childish claim) he can be fairly likened to a zany clown waving a chain saw; he'd be funny if he weren't so dangerous.Bush has often said that he relies on his military leaders to determine troop and materiel needs for the Iraq occupation, but his latest buffoonery involves exercising his own notions of military tactics (of which his ignorance is profound) by calling for a "temporary surge" of 15,000 to 30,000 in troop numbers in Iraq. The uniformed leadership, however, has opposed sending additional forces without a clear mission. Indicative of the rift is the fact that Gen. John P. Abizaid, his top Middle East commander and a leading skeptic of the so-called surge, has announced his retirement. As recently as this past November in testimony before a Senate Committee, Abizaid bluntly rejected the surge option, saying: "I do not believe that more American troops right now is the solution to the problem. I believe that the troop levels need to stay where they are." Other generals have been equally resistant in public and private comments.
President Bush has a remarkably uncomplicated mind; he seems to be utterly incapable of appreciating the plain wisdom articulated by Rep. Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts: "Just because we have men and women in uniform who are willing to die for their country doesn't mean we should require them to do so."
