Once a Repug always a Repug---it's politics as usual, and not concern for civil rights, that motivated this president, as well as Abraham Lincoln.

::::::::

We know we're making progress when the president of the United States acknowledges that racism exists, especially less than 6 months before a major midterm election, and before the NAACP, a curiously timed appearance given that Mr. Bush hasn't honored an invitation by that organization in four years. (AP) Well, at least he got one thing right; Abraham Lincoln was also a Republican, and it was politics as usual back in Lincoln's day that brought about the Emancipation Proclamation, and it's politics as usual that motivated members of the Republican Party today to renew the Voting Rights Act. When 86% of African-Americans vote for Democrats, (AP) it would be naive to think the Texan's remarks about race equity were anything other than damage control. One has only to look at the number of black Americans executed in his home state to see what a sham that he tried to pass off as concern for preserving voting rights at the NAACP conference. Never has disenfranchisement been a greater issue, in this country, since the pilgrims left the motherland on the Mayflower.
