Pat Buchanan made some outrageous claims about Judge Sonia Sotomayor yesterday. He called her a militant, and complained that she was an "affirmative action baby." He talked about her jumping ahead of other kids in her acceptance to Princeton, and scoffed at her reading of children's classics to improve her writing of English.
I don't recall Buchanan complaining about George W. Bush being a "legacy" baby, jumping ahead of other kids in his acceptance to Yale and Harvard, based on his family heritage.
As Joe Conason reports, the record certainly suggests that Bush was far less qualified for admission to Yale, than his classmates without his family connections.
And while we're talking about jumping ahead, what about the way W. jumped ahead of others in getting out of active duty in Vietnam?
Sotomayor is a textbook example of how affirmative action should work. She worked hard, proved herself, and served her country. Buchanan's double standard suggests that he's less concerned about fairness, than about the entitlements of the well-connected.
