Evo Morales is the first indigenous Bolivian ever to be elected to the executive office in his country. He fought and beat Bechtel when they planned to privatise the water supply. Once elected he vowed to break up the aristocracy that have ruled Bolivia for nearly 500 years and re-distribute land and the profits from Bolivian resources (gas, oil, etc) to the indigenous majority.
As has been expected, Morales has been under assult from the the right-wing aristocrats. First, they demanded a referendum in an attempt to oust Morales from office. He won the referendum with nearly 70% of the vote.
Now, violent para-military groups from Peru and Bolivia have begun a reign of terror. The indigenous Bolivians have stood up to machine guns and have been slaughtered (see http://www.ubnoticias.org/en)yet the 'compesinos' have stood their ground.
Morales declared the American ambassador 'persona non grata' and forced him to leave claiming that he had used hi position to assist the right-wing economic elite.
Now, the Bush administration has placed Bolivia on a list of countries that “failed demonstrably” to meet their counter-narcotics obligations.
What we are seeing is the same-old-same-old; Washington, bought and sold by multi-nationals, demands the right to rape the Third World and dictate policy to enhance and ensure profits.
