I will NOT gloat! I will NOT say I told you so. But you may recall I did say early on that Caroline Kennedy was NOT a suitable candidate for the United States Senate. And sure enough, she has dropped out, frankly, the best thing she could have done. Now there’s an uproar about exactly why she dropped out. Stories are flying back and forth among the various camps and no one seems to be happy about how it all has played out. But I’m happy because I was RIGHT, absolutely RIGHT, and, let’s face it, nothing is more fun than being RIGHT! Ms. Kennedy’s attempt to throw her bonnet into the political ring was a miscalculation which would have cost her dearly if the governor of New York had indeed selected her for the U.S. Senate. Just because she’s a Kennedy does not mean she is a politician born and bred. On the contrary, she has consistently exhibited throughout her entire life all of the character traits that are the exact opposite of what makes a political creature. Her shocking discomfort and lack of confidence in the public square do not encourage support from those who wish to think of her as a leader and a leader should at least inspire those around them. Ms. Kennedy is an academic and her background supports this fact about her. Her interests have always been academic and not unlike Condi Rice, Ms. Kennedy belongs in an academic environment much the way Ms. Rice does. Indeed, Ms. Rice has made it quite clear that she intends to return to academic life at Stanford University. If Ms. Kennedy elects to enter the public sector, the academic world is where she belongs and there are plenty of schools in New York City that would be only too happy to have her become a part of their faculty.
