So says Francis Boyle, the professor of international law who drafted the Biological Weapons Anti-Terrorism Act of 1989 enacted by Congress. He states the Pentagon "is now gearing up to fight and 'win' biological warfare" pursuant to two Bush national strategy directives adopted "without public knowledge and review" in 2002. ----- Chris Floyd | Assault on Red Crescent an Escalation in Iraq http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/122006A.shtml Chris Floyd writes: "Less than a mile from where British prime minister Tony Blair was gripping and grinning during a surprise visit to Baghdad on Sunday, agents of the extremist factions that he and George W. Bush have empowered, paid, and heavily armed were raiding the offices of the Iraqi Red Crescent Agency and rounding up some of the few remaining relief workers in the country who attend to the suffering of all sides. This bold, broad-daylight assault came less than 48 hours after top Red Crescent officials publicly accused US military forces of conducting a series of attacks on the agency's offices around the country during the course of the war." ----- W. Patrick Lang and Ray McGovern | It Can't Be Won Militarily; So, Send More Troops? http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/122006L.shtml W. Patrick Lang and Ray McGovern write: "As Robert Gates takes the helm at the Pentagon this week, he can be in no doubt that Vice President Dick Cheney and President George W. Bush remain determined to stay the course in Iraq (without using those words) for the next two years. What Gates probably does not realize is that the US military is about to commit hara-kiri." ----- Neo-Cons Wanted Israel to Attack Syria http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/122006N.shtml Neo-conservative hawks in and outside the Bush administration had hoped that Israel would attack Syria during last summer's Lebanon war, according to a newly published interview with Meyrav Wurmser, the director of the Center for Middle East Policy at the Hudson Institute, a prominent neo-conservative whose spouse is a top Middle East advisor in Vice President Dick Cheney's office. ----- US Inquiry Falters on Civilians Accused of Abusing Detainees http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/122006M.shtml A Justice Department team responsible for investigating accusations that civilian government employees had abused detainees has decided against prosecution in most of the nearly 20 cases referred in the last two years by the Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency. ----- Top NY Republican Is Subject of FBI Inquiry http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/122006S.shtml The New York Senate majority leader, Joseph L. Bruno, one of the three men who effectively control state government, said Tuesday evening that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was looking into his business interests. Mr. Bruno, 77, who will be the state's top Republican when Gov. George E. Pataki leaves office in less than two weeks, offered few details about the nature of the inquiry, which he said he was announcing because it had been leaked to reporters. ----- NOW | A Historic Hoax: Iraq War Intelligence Failures http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/122006U.shtml How could the evidence used to make the case for war with Iraq have been so wrong? In this rebroadcast of a stunning February 2006 NOW on PBS report, an administration insider who helped craft Secretary of State Colin Powell's landmark argument for war, which was presented to the United Nations, claims he unwittingly "participated in a hoax." NOW reports on the serious doubts that existed about the key evidence being used by the American government at the very time Powell's speech was being planned and delivered. ----- Pentagon Wants $99.7 Billion More for Wars ... http://snipurl.com/15h4e ----- Dean Baker | The Drug Scandals Keep Flowing: Time for New Thinking http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/122006D.shtml "Stories of abuses related to the pharmaceutical industry fill the newspapers on a regular basis. The latest involved Zyprexa, a drug used to treat schizophrenia. It turns out that the drug has harmful side effects, such as contributing to diabetes," Dean Baker writes. "This was information that the manufacturer, Eli Lilly, knew but chose not to share with doctors, because it might discourage usage. It turns out that Eli Lilly was also promoting the drug for off-label uses - uses for which it has not received approval from the Food and Drug Administration." ----- Robert Scheer | Bush Can't Kick the Habit http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/122006E.shtml Robert Scheer writes: "Here we go again: A new secretary of defense and yet another call for ending the war in Iraq by escalating it. What are they smoking in the Bush White House?" ----- Ted Glick | Crisis and Opportunity http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/122006EA.shtml "Change; fear of change; acceptance of an unjust status quo; being caught up, even knowingly, in consumerism; TV and computer screen-watching; unwillingness to step out of personal ruts; being weighed down with work and family responsibilities - aren't these the problems that face those of us who are trying to motivate a critical mass of people to join with us to work for a world based upon justice and peace, peace with one another and with the earth?" asks Ted Glick. "Could the climate crisis be what gets us - 'us' collectively, around the world - to join together in the numbers necessary in the common cause of preserving a future worth living in for our children and grandchildren?" ----- Lawsuits Call Air Pollution Standards Deadly, Arbitrary http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/122006EB.shtml As the government rolls out new pollution standards this week, critics are charging federal regulators with ignoring science and arbitrarily allowing toxins into the air. ----- Tzvetan Todorov | Concern for the Truth http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/122006G.shtml Globally recognized historian and philosopher Tzvetan Todorov argues that the foundations of democracy are at risk whenever a country accepts - as the United States did with the war in Iraq - lies and illusion. ----- The Year the World Woke Up ... http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/122006EC.shtml ----- The Hereditary Consequences of Environmental Pollutants http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/122006HA.shtml It starts in the first weeks of life. Researchers said it could explain why people with higher IQ were healthier, as a vegetarian diet was linked to lower heart disease and obesity rates. ----- US Soldiers' Suicide Rate in Iraq Doubles ... http://snipurl.com/15h4y ----- New York Times | Only the Jailers Are Safe ... http://snipurl.com/15h52 _________________________________ .ron corvuswire@verizon.net : Murdered Journalist Discovered Secret U.S. Soldiers Mass Graves in Desert Did the Pentagon order the assassination of a journalist in order to cover up secret mass burials of dead U.S. soldiers & U.S.contract mercenaries in the deserts around Baghdad? In fact, there's no solution for the U.S. government in Iraq, except to get the hell out of Iraq. Do you know who understands these facts? The U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff; virtually all of the U.S. commanders on the ground in Iraq: Colin Powell, Sen. Murtha, Sen. Biden, Cong. Dennis Kucinich, and the voters who voted Democrats into power in Congress. Guess who doesn't understand these facts? That's right - George W. Bush, John McCain and Dem. Sen. Harry Reid. Democrats can stop this insane war and force the troops home by voting 'NO' on Bush's $160 billion war bill to be voted on this April. Will they vote NO? If your Democratic Congressperson votes YES on that bill, they ARE voting FOR Bush's war - no matter what Hillary Clinton and Barak H. Microsoft released its monthly security downloads. The patches fix seven vulnerabilities in all. Three are critical, Microsoft's highest level of severity. They could allow a hacker to control your computer. The remaining four patches were labeled "important." If you haven't installed the patches, run Windows Update. Microsoft is still developing a patch for the Word flaw I told you about last week. Microsoft also issued security updates for the Mac version of Office. Unfortunately, they were released in error; they have not been fully tested. If you installed the updates, remove them. There was no word on a reissue date.
