America has always led the world through example. The standards were high. The people were proud. Foreign nations were happy to align themselves with us.
This Republican administration has changed that. President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and Attorney General Gonzales have shredded many of our rights. I find it absolutely deplorable that the government pays reporters and journalist to read "ads" as if they were news. A strong free press is
essential to freedom.
This administration thinks nothing of seizing suspected terrorists from the street, holding them without access to attorney, and without charges for years. Habeas Corpus, the very cornerstone of justice in this country, is eradicated. People voicing differing opinions, even by simply wearing a tee shirt, have been removed from public gatherings, even jailed.
Evidence exists that America has snatched people from the street and sent them to "secret" prisons worldwide. Some of these people were transferred to other countries for purposes of interrogation. The counties to which they were remanded use torture to procure information. Further evidence has been offered that the CIA maintained secret prisons overseas. Why?
America has always been a nation of those who vote. The ballots were treated as gold. They were treasured, counted, stored, and treated with the utmost respect. Still, there were stories of voting chicanery, the dead voting, multiple voting by the same people, etc. This administration has
taken all this a step further. We use electronic machines that do not leave records. They can be, as has been ably demonstrated, hacked and altered.
Religion has become a tool for the Republican Party. They mouth platitudes in order to be elected, then rob, steal, lie and cheat until caught. This administration has been riddled by more scandals than any in history. No one, absolutely NO ONE, thinks the government is their friend today!!
Other governments have done all of the above before. Americans held these governments accountable for their deeds. The biggest offenders, whose policies most mirror those of Bush-Cheney-Gonzales, were Nazi Germany, and
the Soviet Union.
Their presses were not free. They had unfair systems of justice for their people. They would seize whoever they wanted, whenever they wanted. They would hold them indefinitely, without charges. They would send them to
camps or Siberia.
Are these the types of governments we wish to emulate? Existing Republicans appear to think so. Thirty percent of Americans approve of this administration. That saddens me. Too many have been duped by the evildoers in power.
The Bible has a very short verse, the shortest in the Bible. It says, "Jesus wept." The actions of people had saddened him so. Seventy percent of Americans either weep, or sit idly by feeling powerless.
It is time to organize, register, and vote in the 2008 elections. Sitting aside, crying, won't stop these evildoers. They will continue with more of the same until their last day. They think what they do is just fine.
Thomas Jefferson probably would vehemently disagree. We must do the same!!
