The bad habits of two generations are tough to kick. If the public suffers a couple of years more, perhaps they will mature to do the things that need doing. If they are too lazy, there is always a dictator to make the trains run on time.

Inept as a journalist, I am uncomfortable with current events that fit no traditional pattern. Strangely, I find myself supporting the Afghan escalation.

As Usual I am Drawn to the Minority Argument

My argument on Afghanistan is with the Congress. In 2001 the people deserved a Declaration of War from them. The Congress was too cowardly to take a stand. They feared they would lose their sinecures.
Dennis Kucinich is proposing a bill to get the troops out earlier. Now that the US has opened serious action in Pakistan we need an up or a down vote on a Declaration most urgently.

Obama, LBJ & Nixon were Peace Candidates

"We must stand with Obama. If he wasn't president, leader of the Free World, think about: How many more captives would be tortured? How many more Palestinians would lose the protection of the noble Israeli Occupation Force? Would the supplying of the IOF be any faster? Would the president of Afghanistan be elected more democratically? Could our drones kill more terrorists and their families? Could anyone be more dedicated to supporting the very basis of our society and economy, blessed be, GOLDMAN-SACHS. Could anyone explain in such wonderful detail, WAR IS PEACE. Obama, a clean cut articulate, who reminds me of a law school attendee, except who dropped out, also clean cut and articulate, Ted Bundy."

I Will Go to Korea

An unlikely peace candidate was Dwight David Eisenhower. The Supreme Allied Commander during WWII, he had made a case for war makes peace. In practice, the dictum soon got out of hand. The US crushed democracy in Iran and Guatemala. DDE coined the phrase military/industrial complex. Always a wise and prudent man, he waited until his farewell address to mention it.
I appreciate your satire, Tom Baxter. If we look at the crazy events you outline, they make sense to a second shadow government that is in charge. In my opinion, Obama fears assassination if he doesn't toe the line.

Obama Has Enlightened Us on the Limitations of His Power

The country is really in the pits. She borrows money to start wars she can't win. The US tortures innocents and wonders why they don't love her. The Depression deepens.
A President functions as a cheerleader. If he is lucky, he has an event such as Pearl Harbor or 9/11 to get attention. The Depression is stultifying boring beyond belief.

Schaeffer Battles Right Wing Christian Fanaticism

I should have included a bio on Frank. He was a prominent Evangelical who broke with them many years ago. He has written several perceptive books on the subject. Schaeffer got a lot of play on msnbc as the C-Street scandals broke. He's active now about gay-bashing and murder in Uganda. [C-Street is involved right up to their eyeballs.] Although I'm not sure how, C-Street has strong affiliations with the Tea Party.
The most likely third party I see is the Tea Party. [23% support] They have been subverting the GOP. [18% support] Also, they have been picking up Independents from the Democrats. [36% support]
In Depression since February, we could be in for a double dip downturn economic chaos. Technically, a second quarter of positive growth would end the recession. However, the numbers are all wrong. Foreclosures and unemployment remain high. The credit crunch is still with us meaning the financial tycoons are not in tune with the recovery. It has weak legs. If the economy fails again, Democratic prospects can fly out the window. Bush assembled all the trappings of a dictatorship. A Tea Party victory in 2012 would formalize the tyranny.

Michelle Obama is More Popular than the Guy She Married

I think she is smarter, too. At least, she didn't make any promises. If she could persuade Barack to stay at home and mind the kids, it would free her to run for the top spot.
Did you hear his tough speech in Oslo? Although he remains firm for human rights, he is more a realist than a liberal. The folks in Europe can be liberal because the US protects them. Otherwise, they would be speaking Arabic.
Newt and Sarah applauded his speech. Maybe everybody can re-write his platform a bit.

Obama Has Shown Us to be Niggling Nabobs of Negativism

Forty years of virtual GOP rule has ruined the national character. We are far from being number one in sports we invented: baseball and basketball. Despite resorting to torture, we lost three wars.
We watched the legislators strip the meat out of legislation until nothing remained but the bones.
The bad habits of two generations are tough to kick. If the public suffers a couple of years more, perhaps they will mature to do the things that need doing. If they are too lazy, there is always a dictator to make the trains run on time.

Born a month before Pearl Harbor, I attended world events from an early age. My first words included Mussolini, Patton, Sahara and Patton. At age three I was a regular listener to Lowell Thomas. My mom was an industrial nurse a member of the (more...)
