Sherwood Ross | Army Says Fox TV's "24" Promotes Use of Torture in Iraq Prisons http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707S.shtml Sherwood Ross writes, "After interrogators began torturing Iraqi prisoners using methods they saw on Fox TV's popular '24,' the Army's Brigadier General Patrick Finnegan warned the producers '24' is negatively impacting the training and performance of American troops." --- Rushed by Bush, Troops Sent to War Without Training http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707B.shtml Rushed by President Bush's decision to reinforce Baghdad with thousands more US troops, the Army is forgoing training designed specially to prepare the troops for the challenges of Iraq. --- Adam Cohen | Why Have So Many US Attorneys Been Fired? http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707C.shtml Adam Cohen writes: "It is hard to call what's happening anything other than a political purge. And it's another shameful example of how in the Bush administration, everything - from rebuilding a hurricane-ravaged city to allocating homeland security dollars to invading Iraq - is sacrificed to partisan politics and winning elections." --- The Iraq Effect: War Has Increased Terrorism Sevenfold Worldwide http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707D.shtml Mother Jones presents an eight-part series explaining the effects of the Iraq war, its players, politics, cost in treasure and lives, and long-term implications. --- Rove Received and Ignored Iranian Peace Offer http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707J.shtml Amy Goodman speaks with the National Iranian American Council's Trita Parsi, a former aide to Republican congressman Bob Ney, and examines how Karl Rove and the Bush administration ignored a secret offer to negotiate with Iran in 2003. --- The Israeli Army and Mossad Disagree About Syria http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707G.shtml The military deems that Bachar al-Assad's offers of dialogue must be investigated, while Mossad sees them as nothing but a simple ruse. --- Honeybees Vanish, Leaving Crops and Keepers in Peril http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707H.shtml David Bradshaw has endured countless stings during his life as a beekeeper, but he got the shock of his career when he opened his boxes last month and found half of his 100 million bees missing. In 24 states throughout the country, beekeepers have gone through similar shocks as their bees have been disappearing inexplicably at an alarming rate, threatening not only their livelihoods but also the production of numerous crops. --- Dean Baker | Small Government and the Medicare Drug Benefit http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707M.shtml Dean Baker writes: "There is no issue of small government versus big government. The issue is whether government exists to ensure the security and well-being of the bulk of the population or to redistribute income to those at the top. When government funds are flowing to the wealthy, small-government conservatives have no objection to very big government." --- Bill Quigley | Eighteen Months After Katrina http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707N.shtml "Half of the homes in New Orleans still do not have electricity," writes Bill Quigley. Continuing: "Louisiana received $10 billion to fix up housing. Over 109,000 homeowners applied for federal funds to fix up their homes. Eighteen months later, fewer than 700 families have received this federal assistance.... Visitors to New Orleans can still stay in fine hotels and dine at great restaurants. But less than a five-minute drive away lie miles of devastated neighborhoods that shock visitors. Locals call it 'the Grand Canyon effect' - you know about it, you have seen it on TV, but when you see it in person it can take your breath away." --- Monsanto Merger Sows Fears Over Skewed Seed Market http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707P.shtml A pending merger in the cotton-seed industry is prompting sharp legal and environmental criticisms of biotechnology in US agriculture. The proposed merger would fuse the world's largest seed company, Monsanto, with one of the country's leading cotton-seed firms, Delta and Pine Land. Consumer watchdogs tracking biotechnology's impacts want the federal government to intervene, arguing that the merger would come at the expense of agricultural diversity and the environment. --- Ex-GOP Aide Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy http://snipurl.com/1bhpx --- Edwards: Treaty With Iran Possible http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707L.shtml --- VIDEO | Hersh: Bush Funneling Money to al Qaeda-Related Groups http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022607A.shtml --- Keith Olbermann | Condi Goes Too Far http://snipurl.com/1bij9 --- Stephen F. Rohde | US Court Condemns Detainees to Detention Without Review http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707E.shtml --- Wall Street Adds Climate Change to Bottom Line http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022707F.shtml In the latest sign that global climate change is becoming a major factor for investors, potentially the largest private takeover in the nation's history has environmentalists' fingerprints all over it. --- Baghdad Sees Resurgence of Bomb, Mortar Attack Deaths http://snipurl.com/1bjb8 --- VIDEO | Hersh: Bush Funneling Money to al Qaeda-Related Groups http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022607A.shtml _________________________________ American Politics Journal ... I was sitting, a few days ago, at Number 10 Downing Street in London waiting to go for lunch with a second-tier Tony Blair bureaucrat who is a friend from college when I noticed an unusually large presence of reporters hanging out in the reception lobby whispering and looking "concerned" but still chuckling "knowingly," as so many journalists tend to do. My friend finally walked out, draped in a chalk-striped bespoke three-piece suit with a purple tie, and motioned me to follow him into the inner sanctum where I could actually overhear Tony Blair screeching at someone, "You won't quit because we'll fire you first!" A commotion ensued and out walked what I assumed was high ranking military officer in quite a huff. ... http://jablankfort@earthlink.net JPost: Ayalon: Israel should seek more US military aid "The political clock is right," Ayalon said "We want to do it before the end of President Bush's term, not because of a fear of who may come after him, but simply because of the fact that a new administration - irrespective of who it will be - will need to take its time to establish itself and may take a long time before arriving at any decisions." There is no end to their chutzpah. JB >>Ayalon: Israel should seek more US military aid Read here: http://snipurl.com/1bj9d ----- CP: Elijah: FBI Hunting Dead Panthers America in the time of the Patriot Act. A follow-up to the persecution of the San Francisco Eight former Black Panthers sent two weeks ago. JB >> Excerpt: "John Bowman was a proud man and would not hide from the FBI. Instead of questioning his death, they should instead be investigating why many court records favorable to the defense are missing. Or, why various items of physical evidence have also turned up missing. They overlook those obvious suspicious developments that bear directly on the credibility of this prosecution and instead go looking for a dead man. The whole case just does not pass the smell test and this just further confirms it." Full article >> http://www.counterpunch.org/elijah02242007.html ----- THE REDIRECTION by Seymour M. Hersh Seymour Hersh's articles are always of interest, as much for what may be disinformation or the gaps that are missing, as for the amazing amount of information that he manages to glean from government officials who, for the most part, are anonymous or not clearly identified as being long time lobbyists for Israel such as Martin Indyk or Patrick Clawson on the AIPAC created WINEP. He also fails to mention that splitting up Iraq and other regional countries into smaller size confessional states has been a goal expressed by an important segment of the Israeli hierarchy going back more than two decades. What he spells out here and what was already obvious is that the US war on Iraq, orchestrated by pro-Israel neocons on behalf of what was conceived to be Israel's regional interests, (something Hersh does not mention,) has put the US into a situation that will end in a far greater long-term disaster than even what we see taking place in Iraq today. JB >> http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/070305fa_fact_hersh ----- Franklin Lamb: Wasn't it About Time? Who's Next? This is a more detailed report on the listing of Hizbollah's construction company, Jihad-al-Bina, as a "terrorist organization" by the US Treasury Dept.'s (and the Zionist lobby's) Stuart Levey last week. JB Wasn't it About Time? Who's Next? Come to think of it, wasn't it just a matter of time before the Bush administration would get around to declaring the Lebanese registered construction company, Jihad al-Bina, yet another 'terrorist organization"? It finally did put Jihad al-Bina on the list this week. ...................snip........................ ....[snip] Having failed in its recent 'hot' war in Lebanon, Israel has unleashed its agents in Congress to destroy Hezbollah with 'cold' war tactics including attacking its social institutions. The US Israel lobby has been after Jihad al-Bina for years but the organization became a prime target following the August 14, ceasefire. A quick glance at Jihad al-Bina makes clear why it was slated for the ever expanding Bush administration "terrorism list." Stossel, who is co-anchor of ABC's 20/20, then asked: "And is it a catastrophe, where we have to wreck the lives of poor people and turn our freedom over to [former Vice President] Al Gore and he'll tell us what we can drive and whether we can air-condition our house? And even if he does that, it's not going to make any difference." Read more >> VIDEO: http://snipurl.com/1bk3e ----- Wash. Flag design: http://truth_to_power2006@yahoo.com Note from Diane: MORE BOGUS SENATE HEARINGS (Tues. Morning) -- I'm glad my breakfast was digested before I started catching parts of it. What upsets me, too, is how much it upsets me. Who wants this kind of pollution in the body, but watching these senators pander to each other's lies and obfuscations makes me wretch they way viewing the dead and bloodied bodies of innocent collateral damage makes me wretch. The worst is when they 'good job Brownie' each other; so smug. Did I tell you I believe in reincarnation? If not before, I do now, because these boneheads are all recycled Nazi bootlickers for sure, if you ask me; nasty. I guess this makes us the dupes praying someone will wipe 666 off Boosh's cranium; something, something soon. I wish I lived in Smallville -- we need some special effects. What are we going to do? People are dying. Children and babies are mangled and dying. _________________________________

Using Selective Startup Q. I'm trying to do Selective Startup and can easily get into that screen. However, the XP version is different from the 98 and ME versions. In them, Selective Startup items were spelled out in detail. The XP version does not give options that I understand. Is there something that will explain the items without me having to do a major search? A. Let's first get everyone up to speed. Windows includes its System Configuration Utility for troubleshooting. To open it, click Start>>Run. In the box, enter "msconfig" (without the quotes). Then click OK. On the General tab, you'll see the option for Selective Startup. It allows you to selectively disable parts of Windows. By gradually stripping away or adding functionality, you can isolate problems. Selective Startup allows you to disable SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, System Services or Startup Items. Be sure to listen to me Monday through Friday.
