Though I am deeply cynical about much of American society and culture, in this presidential campaign season Americans have made me proud.  Ron Paul received a well deserved 3 percent from Republicans in Florida.  I never thought that Paul was a serious candidate or that he had any leadership skills whatsoever.  But worst of all, the vast majority of Paul's vocal supporters have shamed his candidacy and his beliefs.  In my 50 years of political engagement I have never seen such a nasty, insulting, bellicose, and obnoxious group of supporters for a particular candidate.  They will keep finding things to blame for Paul's inability to attract wide support from ordinary Americans, because their own closed-mindedness and obsessive thinking prevents them from understanding that Paul's main ideas are not credible, compelling or useful in addressing our many major problems.  When serious researchers examine Paul's effort they should conclude that his infantile and in-your-face supporters did more harm than good for his campaign and that some $20 million was wasted.
