Dear John McCain:You should immediately torpedo Paulson's federal buyout plan, and sink the Democrats and Obama who've made the fatal mistake of endorsing this crazy idea. Who's side are they on anyway -- Main Street's or Wall Street's? It doesn't matter that the Democrats want to add some vague provisions guaranteeing limits for executive pay and helping out some homeowners facing foreclosure. This is so much window dressing, you should explain, and will have no effect on most people. In fact it will just put them deeper in hock.
Better to dump the whole thing, let the markets take their course, and have Wall Street suffer. It'll make you a hero! Better to call Paulson's bluff about the catastrophe that he says will follow. No other way to win! You're really free of Bush if you do that! And you've got the conservative Republicans solidly behind you! It's the perfect end run!
Even better would be for you to go on to propose a vast program of government spending to upgrade the US infrastructure and create jobs, and totally co-op the Democrats. Let's call this Invest in America--something we haven't done for two or three generations--for it would indeed pay for itself many times over, unlike the proposed Wall Street bailout, which is not an investment, but just more toxic debt. So Main Street's suffering will be temporary, whatever happens to Wall Street, while we lay the groundwork for future prosperity.
So let's bring on the purging apocalypse, which by this point is what most people want. They are sick of this namby-pamby nonsense. And you've got Sarah Palin to get us comfortable with the idea.
What's to lose?
You'd better hurry up before Obama figures out that this is exactly what he should do.
