I wanted to start this list based on my recollection of the way things were when I was a kid...things that seemed to work FINE but were systematically dismantled by neo-liberal and neo-conservative administrations, or complete fools who were in the hip pockets of well-monied interests.
These things need to change so that they NEVER happen again:
1. Fox News OFF THE AIR. Gone. History. Arrests.
2. National Public Radio. Fully funded. No more puff-pieces about Fox News, or corporate power-brokers buying air-time so that they can spin their lay-offs later in the week (this actually happened at least once).
3. Fairness doctrine in ALL media. Reinstalled with additional teeth to keep or make the internet as free as any roadway or piece of commons infrastructure.
4. Removal of tolls from all roadways. No private ownership of commons infrastructure.
5. No election of judges, prosecutors or DA's. These are positions that should be appointed in consultation with legal experts and the legal community.
6. No collusion of public and private interests in the academy...I'm tired of seeing wings at Universities "brought to you by Shell Oil," or, "Wyeth Pharmaceuticals." If you want to donate t your alma mater, give to through your alumni organization as an individual citizen.
7. Reinstitute and fund STRATCOM and NORAD. Put them back in the mountain where they belong and get them the hell off of Peterson AFB.
8. Dismantle large SWAT teams and put them in the National Guard where they belong. No local control of SWAT.
9. Break apart Homeland Security into its component parts. This chunk of bureaucracy is less than worthless.
10. Tear apart the National Security state. Rip it to shreds. It should be an advisory arm ONLY.
11. Tear apart the federal reserve banking system.
